The term “T5 Fat Burners” originated in the UK fitness industry around 1990s and was touted as the best weight loss supplement period. Mostly produced in underground labs the stories and user reports of T5 Fat Burners were great and people could not get enough of them. They were a good aid to weight loss containing 3 key ingredients. These ingredients are Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin, which is abbreviated to ECA or referred to as the ECA stack.
So you’re probably wondering, why are they called T5 Fat Burners and not ECA Fat Burners? I have your answer, but it’ll take a little explaining…
There is a hormone that is produced by our thyroid gland called triiodothyronine and is referred to as T3. There is also another hormone that is produced by the thyroid gland called thyroxine and is referred to as T4. Triiodothyronine and Thyroxine are very important that they are producing the correct amount of hormones in our body, as they regulate our weight and energy. An overactive thyroid producing too many hormones and we could end up underweight. An underactive thyroid producing not enough hormones and we could end up overweight. In particular T3 or triiodothyronine is considered the most important of the two hormones when it comes to weight loss.
To manage overweight individuals with underactive thyroids, a GP could prescribe the synthetic hormone Liothyronine Sodium or T3. One such brand is Tiromel and comes in small 25mcg tablets. Unfortunately, these synthetic hormones find their way onto the black market and healthy people with normal thyroid function have been abusing these compounds to tackle their obesity. This is dangerous and could lead to permanent damage of thyroid hormone production.
So we have T3 and T4 hormones secreted by our thyroid gland, so does T5 represent another hormone produced by the thyroid gland? No. T5 appears to have come from thin air, as the next number in the sequence and a catchy marketing name providing people with another weight loss tablet. T5 has nothing to do with the thyroid gland and isn’t an abbreviation for another hormone.
The term T5 has been associated with a powerful combination of ingredients that produce great fat burning results. Now that’s settled, we now need to look at the ingredients within T5 Fat Burners, the ECA stack of Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin.
EPHEDRINE
Ephedrine which is a synthetic form of plant based ephedra alkaloids promotes a moderate and short term fat burning effect. Ephedrine is best known as stimulate thermogenesis in the brown adipose tissue. Take Ephedrine and expect to feel wide awake, full of energy and not think about your next meal, as Ephedrine decreases gastric emptying. Ingredients like caffeine have a synergistic effect with ephedrine in respect to weight loss. This then led to the creation of the above mentioned ECA stack.
Since the early 2000s, Ephedrine has been banned in the UK and most of the western world. You can only obtain Ephedrine via a prescription. For all its stimulant like feeling, the ability for you to not think about food for hours, Ephedrine has many side effects and we shouldn’t just dismiss these, as just happening to other people. The following common negative symptoms have been experienced:

• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Trouble sleeping (insomnia)

• Dry mouth
CAFFEINE
Caffeine doesn’t ’t really require any introduction. It’s often hard to believe that it’s actually a drug, as we consume it morning noon and night in hot and cold drinks. It is the world's most consumed psychoactive drug. However, unlike many other psychoactive drugs, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world. People use it to feel wide awake and reduce drowsiness.
ASPIRIN
Aspirin is a drug that is used to reduce pain, fever, or inflammation. If someone has a fever or in pain, you would find them having a combination of paracetamol and aspirin. Due to the fact this ingredient is a drug and available over the counter does mean there are restrictions on its sale and use. You wouldn’t typically find a health / herbal supplement for weight loss having such a powerful pain killer.
So what does Aspirin have to do with weight loss? Nothing. In fact the only reason why Aspirin is used in the stack is because it helps Ephedrine stay in the body for longer and therefore prolonging the effects.
